Penkernewek was organized in 1997 to recognize the Cornish Heritage of the State of Pennsylvania. It is based in the Slate Belt region of Pennsylvania where in the late 19th century many Cornish quarrymen immigrated to work in the local slate quarries.
The association hosted the 10th Gathering of Cornish Cousins in 1999 in the town of Pen Argyl, sponsored by the Cornish American Heritage Society.
Penkernewek also has a room in the Slate Belt Heritage Center in Bangor, PA that represents a 1920's home of a Cornish family. The making of pasties and saffron nubbies are represented in the kitchen with a cup of tea. The lady of the house is has several dresses and needlework displayed.
