The Cornish Room, Slate Belt Heritage Center, 33 North 1st Street, Pen Argyl,Pennsylvania

The Heritage Center is open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday noon till 4 p.m., May through October. Meetings, with interesting speakers, are held the second Thursday of the month at 7 pm in Council Chambers and the public is welcome.

Penkernewek was one of the charter organizations in the 1999 founding of the Slate Belt Heritage Center. The Cornish Room established there represents an immigrant’s home in the 1920’s after most of the immigration was completed. Traditional Cornish foods are highlighted in the kitchen area and are served during special occasions. The family home represents the better life that the Cornish immigrant sought in coming to this new country. There is no doubt it is unique among the various rooms of the Heritage Center for there is a warmth and personality that makes it seem like home. herit4t.jpg (10921 bytes)

That is no accident, for much thought went into how to make this look like part of a Cornish-American home in the 1920’s. We were lucky to have a wonderful mantel already in the room, as well as some very nice woodwork. The area of the living room centers on the mantel and has been wallpapered in a floral pattern. There is a low display case separating this area from the walkway and kitchen part of the room. In the kitchen is an old gas stove with saffron nubbies coming fresh from the oven, as well as a table where pasties are being made.

Most of the items on display are on loan from members of Penkernewek. We would like to keep the room updated with changing displays. The Heritage Center also offers display area for monthly displays of collections. If you have any items available for long-term loan, short-term loan or special display, or a suggestion for a speaker for one of the monthly meetings, we would like to hear from you.

If anyone has a private collection with a Cornish or Cornish-American related theme, please let Carolyn Bray know about it.

An area will be available in the council chambers for genealogy research. This will allow access to the collection of materials we accumulated at the Gathering. We are encouraging the other groups to add to this so that we can cover the heritage of the entire Slate Belt at the Center.

We are grateful for the generosity of the Cornish American Heritage Society, which made a $500 donation to the Cornish Room from its share of the 10th Gathering profits. Their donation has been used to purchase a Video-VCR and a message repeater. These items make it possible for the visitor to learn about our Cornish Heritage. Lastly, the room will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. till 4 p.m.; April through October, and must be staffed with volunteers. No special knowledge is required, but we truly need every one of you to donate as much time as you can with this endeavor. Please contact either Carolyn Bray or me to let us know how much time you can spare and when. If we don’t get enough people contacting us, then we will be contacting you to ask your assistance. Thanks!
